August 23, 2012: Press Release: "The Salvation Army remains Committed
to Howard Hospital": Commissioner Brian Peddle, Territorial
Commander, Canada & Bermuda: "We consider the health of its
patients and the well-being of the staff at Howard Hospital to be of paramount
importance."
If the health of the patients had been of
"paramount" importance, reasons to move Dr. Thistle would have been
"secondary" and would have been delayed and coordinated with the on
site arrival replacement surgeon, and is not yet resolved 11 months later. And
was any logical thought or consideration given to how Dr. Thistle, given just
24 hours to vacate the hospital and another 24 hours to leave the country?
Seventeen years of accumulated files, research, medical records to sort
through- patients needing their medical charts updated and shared with those
taking over Thistle’s typical 18-hour daily rounds. And what about all the
patients scheduled for surgery at the hands of this exceptionally skilled
physician? And children in a boarding school… The expulsion was rushed
and negligent of any patient safety or concern with reprehensible consequences:
many patients died. In Canada (Dr. Thistle’s home country), such a
situation would have led to charges of criminal negligence leading to death.
Many staff members spoke out against Thistle’s
dismissal, fully aware that retaliation, including bodily harm might follow. As
far as Commissioner Peddle’s assurance for the well-being of the staff, at the
time of the above statement, eight nurses from the hospital had been beaten,
arrested, tortured and denied food. It was reported that the Hospital
Administrator gave the police names of nurses who opposed Dr. Thistle's move.
No Salvationists (HQ) visited these nurses in prison except Dr. Thistle, who
refused orders from IHQ to abandon them. It’s logical to assume that THQ
Toronto was simply echoing the hollow assurances being sent out from IHQ.
Officers from Zimbabwe THQ witnessed against
them at their trial. However, their witness (THQ officer?) was
"contradictory" and "unreliable" according to the judge,
who set seven free for "lack of evidence". When asked about the
nurses' plight by Stephen Lewis, Lewis reported that the General replied,
"They were inciting violence." The nurses presence must not
have been of sufficient threat as all but one returned to work at Howard
Hospital, Martin Zindoga, still charged but under appeal. He has been
dismissed from the hospital.
26 October, 2012: "Statement Regarding the Salvation Army's Howard Hospital, Zimbabwe":
"The Salvation Army is able to report that:
▪
there is no sign that donated funds have been diverted from their original
purpose
▪
donated goods, falsely reported to have gone missing, are all accounted
for"
Donors in Peterborough, Ontario have requested
some $10,000 donated to the hospital and receipted, for construction of a
duplex residence, be returned, as the residence has not been built. They have
received no answers to these requests. The money remains missing to this date,
obviously diverted from its original purpose.
Donated goods, including building materials for
the above structure and medical instruments owned by SHUMBA Medical were not ‘falsely
reported to be missing’; they are indeed missing and unaccounted for, and
remain so. It has been reported by the SA Zim that some of the building
materials are at the hospital (door and window frames) and that photographs
have been taken and are available, but no photos have ever been provided. When
asked about bricks, sand, lumber (roof beams) and roofing sheets, the Salvation
Army Zim would not respond. They did acknowledge that that the cement, a highly
valued black market commodity, which had already been purchased, had not yet
been delivered.
November 7, 2012: Online press release, reported
in Peterborough Examiner, November 13: "The
hospital continues to operate with qualified medical personnel serving
thousands of people each month and reports the hospital is functioning at 10%
are false, the church said. Spokesman Andrew Burditt said the hospital
served 7,623 patients in September, down from 9,571 in June, meaning it was
running at about 80% capacity, he said. Patients continue to be treated
at Howard and more difficult cases are being referred to other facilities,
Burditt added."
Maternity services at the hospital are popular
and highly valued, thanks to an excellent midwife and staff, however, the
quality has lessened since Thistle’s departure. Doctors do perform Caesarian
sections, though maternal mortality is up. In contrast, the main hospital
wards, usually operating at 100% capacity, were at a disturbingly low10%
of capacity at the time Burditt’s statement was written, and remains between
10% and 20% of capacity to this date, August 5, 2013.
Even if one were to include the Maternity wing,
no one visiting the hospital in recent weeks has ever witnessed it 80% full.
The near-empty main wards contradict official statements to such a degree that
visiting donors are not allowed to enter them. Two recently entered
secretly under dark, and another had his driver perform a count, a newspaper
reporter managed to get in, and nearby residents keep count, all agreeing on
the low numbers.
Patients who are referred to Harare hospitals,
Zimbabwe’s capital, are treated only if they are able to pay the high costs
demanded there. Most are unable to do so, and have been left unattended.
Many have died.
11 July 2013: John Murray, IHQ: "IHQ Official Response to all Enquiries
re: Howard Hospital": "However, for the record, the Salvation Army is
pleased to advise that three doctors are in place at the hospital and staff
morale is improving as confidence increases. The Salvation Army International
Headquarters recently appointed Dr. Per-Gote Lindgren, a Swedish surgeon, and
his wife Birgitta to Howard Hospital."
Today, almost one month later this third doctor
is still not in place at the hospital, confirmed by telephone. Dr. Lindgren, a
Salvationist and son of SA officers, is a retired surgeon, however, he will not
be registered in Zimbabwe to practice medicine. His appointment is not as a
surgeon, as implied above, but as Hospital Administrator.
These are only a part of the allegations. Only
an independent audit conducted by a credible outside agency, with no restrictions
placed on it as to the reporting of the outcome, is needed to restore
confidence in the face of the false SA press releases.
In seeking credible verifiable information in
researching our investigative report E-mails have been sent to the Army’s International
Headquarters requesting clarification on Dr. Thistle’s removal. No direct
responses have been received. All requests are automatically re-directed to the
Army’s Canadian Territorial Headquarters.
Comments posted by visitors to the SA Canadian
website confirm unwavering support for Dr. Thistle and condemnation for the
Army’s reprehensible handling of this matter.
All active and retired officers in the Canada
& Bermuda territory have been told not to comment on-line or off-line
about the Howard Hospital debacle. Secrecy and gag orders are how many
militaristic organizations function: keep those on the front lines ignorant of
the decisions being made by those in the war room.
Official reports continue to provide glowing
reports of the restoration of the hospital, while visitors are not allowed to
visit the wards and see first what the true conditions are. The count of
patients in the wards remains at less than 10% of the 144-bed capacity. The two
Zimbabwean doctors at HH reportedly keep busy with private practice patients in
addition to the employment at the hospital. Medicines and supplies have run out
or are in short supply.
And yet the Salvation Army continues to provide
an exaggerated picture of hope and wellbeing, the opposite of the reality that
we know to be is the Howard Hospital.
Many are suffering. Many are dying.

This story moves me to shed tears. How can I be ever give in an annual appeal kniwing this tragic story.
I suggest these postings on the HH story go to the ... press, charity commission and UN. This is toxic and cant continue.
We must unite and pray for the Thistle family,HH and for a justice that impacts and audits this dispicable series of events. That any Salvationist involved is either sacked retired and prosecuted. To do nnothing now is to be culpable.

The hospital meanwhile is facing a desperate situation, with no chief surgeon being appointed to replace Dr. Thistle. The local community has also been actively silenced, with a heavy police presence in the area preventing people from protesting.

El Cajon Corps Zimbabwe Mission Trip 2013
By Captain Terry Masango | July 22, 2013
...
During our recent mission trip to Zimbabwe, we visited various corps which were engaging in huge building projects to house all the new soldiers being in enrolled regularly. Marikopo, Mungate, Braeside, Highfield Temple, and many others are raising funds to build new Salvation Army halls so that they can continue to minister effectively to their surrounding communities. It was a breath of fresh air watching God grow His church, and to be a part of enabling their growth. In addition to providing funds to various corps,
a. We led 2 Vacation Bible School sessions. The first VBS was attended by 125 children. There were almost 200 children at the second VBS.
b. We led and participated in 6 mid-week village meetings. The average village meeting attendance is 50!
c. We led and participated in the 3 Sunday Worship meetings. There were hundreds of soldiers braving the 55 Degree weather. There are no doors or windows in the massive structure to protect the soldiers from the harsh elements.
d. We led a Marriage Enrichment Seminar for couples attended by 47 couples.
e. We were invited to a private school, where I taught the “prefects” (student leaders) on leadership. It was a heartwarming watching these 12 year olds cast a vision of their leadership.
f. We led one Men's Fellowship meeting. We gave out working gloves to 56 men who attended the meeting.
g. We led one Corps Cadets meeting.
h. We donated $30,000 for the completion of The Salvation Army Highfield Temple hall
i. We donated 7 brass instruments to Highfield Temple. We also donated 3 brass instruments and clothes at the Bumhudzo Old People’s Home.
j. We led and participated in 2 Home League meetings. It was at the second Home League meeting that we donated 76 goats to the Mungate Corps Home League ladies. We handed out a male and a female goat to each lady. This project is bound to be a great success as goats multiply quickly. Goats, and other livestock, are a source of wealth in Africa. The goats will be a great source of protein. The poor families will no longer have to buy milk as they can get that from the goats. The goats will provide meat, when needed. Families struggling to pay for their children’s education can sell the offspring to raise funds for school fees. The goats’ skins can be used as mats on which to sleep. The families can make drums to sell using the skins, as well.
k. We donated clothes to the Over Sixties Club, the children, as well as the Home League. We gave out Bibles and crafts, too.
We visited Howard Hospital and prayed with various patients.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All that detailed activity listed and all they have to say about Howard Hospital:
We visited Howard Hospital and prayed with various patients.
I guess there isn't much to report if there aren't many patients at HH to interact with.
I again have learned new information in this posting. We have long since stopped supporting TSA financially until something is done about this situation.
At this time there is no confidence in the highest levels of leadership of TSA and this posting is right in calling for the immediate removal from active service of Commissioners, Colonels and Majors - any officers who have had a role in the decision making or who have disseminated misinformation for the Army.
What role did the new General Andre Cox play? What role did legal advisor to the General, Kenneth Hodder, play? What role did former CoS Barry Swanson play? Was the resignation of Linda Bond prompted by these Commissioners due to this humanitarian disaster or were they complicit with the decisions? These are important questions and if these leaders want to regain any trust and respect for leadership, they will have to reveal their role in the decisions that were made.
This morning we were told in the Holiness meeting that the people who need to know why Linda Bond resigned, do know, and as for the rest of us, it's none of our business. Many Salvationists disagree because they regard the office of the General as being a public office - it is the business of rank and file soldiers - lay and officer soldiers. This attitude smacks of the "mushroom" school of theology!
Let the leadership know that Salvationists are well past this stage and no longer accept being treated as mushrooms.
Zimbabwe: Salvation Army Chief 'Reassigned' in Ongoing Howard Hospital Saga
By Alex Bell, 8 October 2012
Related Topics
The head of the Salvation Army in Zimbabwe has been 'reassigned' to a mission out of the country, amid the ongoing saga around the Howard Hospital in Chiweshe.
Sources told SW Radio Africa that Vinece Chigariro will start her new position in Kenya in January 2013. The Salvation Army International Headquarters in London did not confirm or deny this development in email correspondence on Monday, and instead directed all queries to the Zimbabwe offices. The Zim offices are yet to respond to requests for more information.
It is understood that Chigariro's reassignment is linked to an investigation into alleged financial mismanagement by the Salvation Army leadership in Zimbabwe, which has seen the launch of an international probe into operations at the Howard Hospital in Chiweshe.
Delegations from the London headquarters and from the Canadian mission visited the hospital recently, after concerns of possible corruption were raised by the former chief doctor, Paul Thistle.
Thistle was dismissed from his position shortly after raising these concerns. The Salvation Army has insisted that his reassignment to his native Canada was above board and part of their internal processes.
Dr. Thistle was given a 48 hour ultimatum to leave Zimbabwe after his forced removal in August. He still remains in Zimbabwe, but is not allowed to return to the Howard mission. He has insisted he will not leave while eight of his colleagues face criminal charges.
Eight nurses and 12 other Chiweshe residents were arrested during protests against Dr. Thistle's dismissal in August, and have been accused of inciting violence. The group was back in court Monday, where four Salvation Army officials testified against them.
A source who was in court Monday told SW Radio Africa that the testimonies from the four officials provided conflicting information about events at the protest. He said testimonies were given by Majors Makiwa, Nyahuma and Ncube, and Colonel Moyo.
I am sure that you all will be very pleased to know that the web address details and contents of this FSAO blog, which includes the owners email address of course, has now been formally passed on to the City of London Police and the UK Charity Commission for consideration.
Fraud, theft, corruption and deception are serious criminal offences and it is excellent that this FSAO blog has facilitated reporting these so that further action can be taken against the perpetrators and justice for the Kingdom's sake be achieved.
The more I read about this scandal, the more infuriated I become. The frustrating thing for many of us is: what on earth can we (rank and file salvationists) do about it?
Do we all write to IHQ with our demand for action? Is there any "petition" out there that people can sign? Is anybody able to create a "protest" FB page. Has anybody "leaked" this to the press, charity commission or other relevant control organ?
Many of us demand to see justice and fairness, but feel helpless.
As previous contributors have hinted, international leadership MUST act and MUST speak out if they want to retain any credibility AT ALL. If this scandal is just brushed under the carpet, I will lose total resepect for the TSA international leadership and would even consider relinquishing my soldiership and all financial support for TSA.
Will TSA ACT, and NOW! For the good of all concerned? I sincerely hope so!
daniel, even from norway you too could take a principled lead here and report it yourself as well to the uk authorities.
Well someone has had the "bottle" to report thisto the City if London Police and the Charity Commission for England & Wales. Time will tell now if any action or investigation happen.
As for this blog. As sad as it must have been to reveal these facts you (the researchers) have achieved your aims. Now it is time to keave further the research to the authorities. But thank you fir your work.
We now need to return to prayerful matters for Dr Thistle and HH. Therefore I propose anyone who has stopped giving to TSA give directly to Sven for this blog to be active in supporting that work. This way we overcome evil with good.
May those responsible for the TSA action be brought down. While this ongoing investigation happens perhaps General Larson/Clifton & others of note should take command executing justice through sackings.
Anonymous who implied that the duty has been done and now it's time to move on -
The aim of this issue has not been to just get the facts reveals.
Oh no, my anonymous friend, we have only just begun the battle.
I'm sure that the powers-that-be at Canada & Harare THQs and at IHQ would like us to go away after saying our piece. But I know that *I* will not.
This is not only about HH and the tragedy there for the people of Chiweshe and for the Thistles.
This is about the problems pervasive in Army leadership which need to be rooted out.
Gandhi and Martin Luther King didn't stop after their first battle. We will continue until changes are made.
I agree with Jolinda. To the person who began 'I am sure that you all will be very pleased to know' - I have to say that it sounds quite threatening, and may put some people off from penning their thoughts, but when we cannot reconcile spiritual leadership with the actions and discrepant statements issued by IHQ/THQ regarding Dr Thistle, HH, and Zimbabwe THQ, then who is left to speak up for them?
The natural avenue would be to approach senior leaders, but if they refuse to acknowledge any enquiries (as we have seen in various postings), then how would you suggest the matter be dealt with? Seems an impasse to me.
I agree with you Jolinda.
I too saw that first paragraph as a treatening one.Trying to put people off and giving IHQ an excuse to make no comment due to a possible investigation.
How can we stand by and watch injustice self-perpetuate for lack of challenging it? None of us are saints, but, as the SA song says 'there are standards that remain'.
UK
Some people one can never please! At least something positive has been done rather than just talk and go around in circles.
Are we not talking about evidenced, beyond reasonable doubt, blatant criminality on this blog here? At least one poster here has been in the police force for many years and might confirm that?
I continue to pray for Dr Paul,Pedrinah, James and Alexander Thistle that they are both physically and spiritually safe and well. They are a lovely family and what a Ministry both Paul and Pedrinah have as they continue to fulfil the Ordained Ministry God has chosen them to do.I pray too for the people of Zimbabwee.
UKT
I'm not altogether sure that anything has been passed to the police and the charity commission. Maybe designed to put people off commenting?
I don't always accept what is written here without researching it.
I would imagine that if it HAD been reported, then Sven would have corroborated it, but it is yet another anonymous blog. There has been some criticism of remaining anonymous, but it does give people the scope to say what they really feel. I think that is also good for TSA, because for those from IHQ who read these articles and responses, they give an idea of the feelings of the foot soldiers.
UK
Why would Sven have to corroborate in this reporting to the UK authorities? Surely anyone can do this without any reference to anyone else.
I love The Salvation Army and eternally grateful that I was brought to Faith because of it.
Dr Paul Thistle brought to light what could be corrupt practices or at least issues of morality and ethical nature which at the onset were dealt with harshly without proper recourse to an investigation and being too reliant on verbal and written report. Yes, as matters began to go from bad to worse an inquiry of sorts was set up which appeared to confirm senior officers in their thinking.
After Dr Thistle was removed there began what could well be classed as a 'cover up' and this continues today with inconsistant replies to any who inquire by letter or e-mail.
The Salvation Army must address the terrible circumstances surrounding events at the Howard Hospital and instigate an Independent Inquiry.
Well, since the poster said they also passed on Sven's email address, we can only assume that they meant for Sven to be considered an authoritative source who could provide documentation. That says to me they were looking to implicate Sven in some way. So, let us see if they do reach out to Sven.
Jolinda
"the web address details and contents of this FSAO blog, which includes the owners email address of course, has now been formally passed on to the City of London Police and the UK Charity Commission for consideration"
All the documentation is freely available on an open website. How any authority proceeds on such information is up to them. In the end it is the law of the country that needs to be upheld and against which anything is measured.
True enough. If the reporting has been done, then I am glad that someone or someones else have done it. The more the merrier!
But regardless of the status of any reporting to any governmental or other official entity, we will not stop holding the SA leadership accountable for what happened at HH nor what happened with the Thistles.
Most importantly, we will continue to push the issue that SA leadership is crumbling and needs to change. And if they act as if they don't hear us, or by not reacting that we will go away, we won't. We will question, we will hold accountable, we will point out the wrongs.
Do not mistake what I am saying. We will also be praying, but we will also continue to take actions.
"Most importantly, we will continue to push the issue that SA leadership is crumbling and needs to change. And if they act as if they don't hear us, or by not reacting that we will go away, we won't. We will question, we will hold accountable, we will point out the wrongs."
Good stuff!
And also acknowledge all the positives at the same time, I hope?
I refer to the message 'Why would Sven have to corroborate in this reporting....'
What I meant was that a message like that would have come with Sven's signature on it. If you look back through these threads, you'll see that that is true.
It worries me that whoever wrote this is not more supportive.
After all, although this issue is geographically removed from most of us, what if it had happened where WE live? What if it had happened to OUR nearest and dearest? What if we ourselves were being treated by a 'Dr Thistle' and he was suddenly wrenched from our sight with no guidance as to what would happen to us in the middle of our treatment? And how would we feel when we learned there was no-one replacing him and we were left with no surgeon to care for us? What if we ourselves were reliant on daily medication to keep us going - how would we feel if it was suddenly withdrawn? I don't think we would be criticising those who are seeking to right this wrong.
These are moral and humanitarian errors that should never have happened, particularly by a Christian organisation, and exacerbated by the fact there STILL is no doctor/surgeon at the Howard hospital.
I don't mind if I'm located by my e-mail address from any inquiry - I am only concerned about the welfare of the Chiweshe people and their medical facility - or lack of it, and in a free country I am entitled to give my views. That's all anyone does on here - give their views, in the hope that someone at IHQ will listen.
There must be hundreds of blogs on here expressing shock, horror, concern, sympathy, sorrow, compassion for those who have suffered and are continuing to suffer, but not a peep out of TSA either to stem the tide or to stand with the Chiweshe people.
UK
I so wish there are some icons I could use like on Facebook. So many good comments that needs "thumbs up".
Tonight I listened to a wonderful concert by the ISB. The Swanson's were back from the HC and Sue Swanson asked for prayer for General Andre Cox and she mentioned something about times of change in TSA.
Leadership has to initiate change - for starters how they handle situations. But they have to stop equating the will of SA leadership with the will of God. To me this is a form of idolatry.
The archaic system that William Booth describes in 1890 in his book "In Darkest England and the Way Out", where he says officers are to obey "the directing brain" and speaks of his admiration for Napoleon and wants that system and level of obedience for officers in TSA, has to go and a more co-operative system implemented which gives grassroots soldiers a say in decision making.
The autocratic, hierarchical, military structure is no longer appropriate and certainly is no longer an asset of TSA as William Booth thought it was in 1890.
Let's pray and continue the pressure for change.
I Agree with the previous poster; it is my prayer that this scandal, as horrific as it is, will serve as an agent for positive change within the Army. Namely. getting rid of the appointment system and the lack of accountability for the Army's leaders.
I will be updating the FSAOF blog as soon as my laptop is sufficiently charged- I am currently in Borispol airport, Kiev Ukraine waiting for our 3 o’clock flight this afternoon airport having just arrived on the overnight train from Simferopol. an 18 hour journey.
I will give thought to all possible alternatives prior to contacting the media. Perhaps the best alternative would be a petition signed by all FSAOF members, Salvationists and supporters. This ought certainly to pique their interest! This could be addressed directly to the General giving IHQ a timeframe by which to respond. If no response is forthcoming then we can give thought to contacting the media.
I have personal contacts with the following sources: CNN, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, ABC, NBC CBS and the Toronto Star, All have featured my work on their front and editorial pages on several occasions beginning with the establishment of a high school for the homeless that I founded at the Salvation Army corps midtown Manhattan where I was the commanding officer. And, CNN, BBC, etc. and the New York Times followed up on my service as a pioneer in reopening the Army’s work in Russia and Ukraine. I’ll revert later today… blessings
I'm reminded of the song:
God's soldier marches as to war
A soldier on an alien shore
A soldier true, a soldier who
will keep the highest aims in view.
God's soldier goes where sin is found
Where evil reigns, his battleground:
A cunning foe to overthrow
And strike for truth a telling blow.
God's soldier has to stand alone
Accepting burdens not his own:
A lonely work he cannot shirk
Where dark and deadly dangers lurk.
God's soldier must courageous be
And from his duties never flee:
For millions wait, whose need is great
And he must not God's plan frustrate.
I'll leave out the chorus, which is ultra cheesy, but it's very often not the enemy outside the fellowship who is the most powerful, but the enemy within. Satan loves to infiltrate among God's people and apply his subtle persuasions - so subtly that we are often taken unawares and before we know it we are caught up in his web of deceit and lies - among other sins
.
Today, God's church is more under attack than ever, and TSA is no exception. I believe that this sad, sorry HH issue is one of these satanic attacks and we must all act responsibly so that we can exorcise it from our ranks. These attacks are no respector of persons or SA rank, and we would do well to remember that we are all susceptible, and we all succumb in varying degrees.
I remember as a child reading a book about big sins and little sins, and in the end there is no difference - sin is sin.
'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger' is a current phrase. I do pray that with our confessions, our prayers, God's help, and the Holy Spirit's guidance we may all emerge from this distressing experience a stronger spiritual force, and I pray that our leaders will act, not to defend reputations, but to ensure there is true reconciliation in the HH case. We must all do our part for the Christian cause - wherever wrong is found - including inside the church.
Resorting to such ultimate actions is more often than not the result and sign of galling desperation at getting nowhere through usual channels and the notion of not being taken serious enough, ignored and stonewalled as if you do not exist. That is a nightmare scenario for any crusader who's main aim it is to be heard and taken seriously.
FSAO may well feel this way as it has struggled for six years to be (become) a credible and acceptable focus group interacting officially on behalf of former and ex officers at highest level.
"Blackmail is the crime of threatening to reveal damaging or embarrassing information in order to coerce money or other goods or forms of cooperation out of the victim. For blackmail to be effective, the blackmailer must, in most cases, have physical proof of the information he or she threatens to reveal, such as photographs or letters. Blackmail is often considered synonymous with extortion, and in this sense it may rely on a threat of action other than exposing the victim's secrets.
......blackmail may be defined as extortion attempts in writing. Alternatively, blackmail may refer only to threats of action that is not illegal per se, such as revealing compromising photographs........
........... At its most serious, blackmail may rest on the exposure of a serious crime, which would do infinitely more damage to the victim than complying with the blackmailer. Even secret information that is not of a criminal nature, however, can make the victim of blackmail feel that he or she has no recourse against the crime"
Can't see any blackmail attempts on here myself. TSA consists of leaders, officers and soldiers/ adherents. There is a huge chasm of information-sharing between those at the top and those at the bottom, especially as the top people emphasis ad nauseum that we are the priesthood of all believers.
The HH situation is a tragedy resulting from actions at the top. These have been freely reported in the international press. The people at the bottom -whose existence the top people have to rely on for survival - are asking what on earth has gone on. The people at the top make decisions that affect the whole of the organisation, and now the little people are asking why.
That's all - no blackmail.
But - there's no answer from the top. And the little people are wondering 'why?'
That's all. No blackmail.
But - still silence from the top.
A petition to General Cox would surely be the kindest and wisest first step. I suggest that such a petition might make two requests: First, that an independent enquiry, headed by an experienced non-officer Salvationist, examine all the evidence relating to HH with recommendations about how it might best be resolved: Second, another independent commission, composed of officers and lay people, to examine throw best the autocratic system might be revised over a period of time, to ensure transparency, justice,NAND in the future, lay participation in major policy decision making (eg: C ofvE Synod).
The old adage ...silence is golden. .. springs to mind. But no its not. The gold hss lost its sparkle. TSA has become dross because of its leaders the minions have had enough as many have suffered greatly by following culpable leaders who don't care.
We need the refining fire ... may the holy spirit purge our souls and refine us once more ... beauty from ashes.
If this has to happen through a petition good if the General acts ... if this has to happen through the media then all must be on the altar. Blackmail it is not accountability it is ...
Excellent idea ... house of soldiery ... house of officers and house of comm n Col. Then in all decision a third majority voting. Happens in Anglican; Methodist and others. We only have to loik at the Roman Catholic model of leadership to know autocratic leadership fails big time.
So the TSA needs to as the song says ...Dare to be different.
Well said by this Blogger.
I agree about the petition - but if officers have received a gagging order, how many would sign it? The foot soldiers have little to lose by exposing our identities, as we are all volunteers, but if comments on this website are to be believed, officers wouldn't want to say who they are for fear of reprisals. (Can't believe I'm even typing this for a Christian organisation).
Also, I agree about the enquiry, but from experience in observing one non-officer auditor, I don't think there would be any different outcome. After all, they are paid by TSA. In my opinion, it should be someone external and completely independent.
And I do agree that the days of autocratic leadership have passed.
I AMA retired officer and have no knowledge of any gagging order, certainly not in the UK. However I know of many active officers whom I am certain would support a petition for change.
What gagging order is there in place? I am not aware of any as this is a non-issue in the UKT
There's a petition on the right of the screen now.
A non-issue in the UK? Have you seen the live feed? It's going around the UK quite steadily. The only UK country I haven't seen on there is Ireland. I think THQ would LIKE it to be a non-issue in the UK, but the story IS being shared among salvationists.
Yup, even though a number of individuals know about this, it still remains a non-issue in the UKT with no external nor internal media reporting of any kind except through this blog.
and no gagging order of any kind!
How would you know?
I think that one of the original purposes of the FSAO - interacting advocacy on behalf of former and ex officers with SA territorial and international leadership around the world will become much more difficult to achieve in days to come. A shame really.
I know and so does anyone else in the UKT.
Who does 'anyone else in the UK' refer to, please?
Knowledge of the issue is growing by leaps and bounds. Different SA locations are checking in. Different countries around the world.
To the nay-sayers who want to play down the spread of information, I say that you only wish it was not spreading. But it is. And it's not just the rank & file... donor organizations are reading about it too.
Don't you think that those who have supported Dr. Thistle have been here? Don't you think they've spread the word amongst themselves?
Because if you don't believe or refuse to acknowledge, that is your own issue to deal with.
There's a petition to sign on the right of the screen.
"Who does 'anyone else in the UK' refer to, please?"
Any one else in the UK? ;);)
There is NO gagging order of any description as the HH saga is a non-issue here as it is in the vast majority of the wider SA world as well.
That does not mean of course, that there is no knowledge of it amongst some people there but it is not a national issue of importance on any ones agenda.
That does not mean that IHQ or a THQ is not putting an embargo on known information or comment from being made public, or in some cases, passed onto any unauthorized third party. This is normal practice for any company.
There is no need for such an embargo to be placed on anyone else because there is nothing to embargo!
To Anonymous who said ' it is not a national issue of importance on any ones agenda.'
Well, well - how cheap human lives are to some people. Does that mean that if nothing is done about this matter the Chiweshe people can rest assured that TSA will act on their behalf and makes things better for them? It doesn't look like it.
And does it mean that TSA will just carry on with their dubious financial practices in overseas territories? I've heard that there may be something similar going on in another African region.
No - I fear if the tide is not stemmed, then TSA leadership will sink ever deeper into this mire.
Where is your compassion for people who re suffering? Unbelievable.
typo erratum: 'is not putting an embargo' should read 'could place an embargo'
I have a problem with the way this petition has been set up. It is stating what should be done, almost making its own conclusions, whereas my idea would be an open request simply for an independent investigation to assemble and analyse all facts and then for such to make recommendations to the General. I think that if it were done in this way then a large response would be immediate whereas many will have reservations in making a petition which has already passed its own verdict.
If ' it is not a national issue of importance on any ones agenda.' - Well double shame because it should be!
Thank you to even active officers who are signing the petition.
It's not just lay soldiers who want the autocratic, hierarchical, militaristic obedience system to change, so do many active officers. The synod system of other denominations giving grassroots members even a voice in decision making would be a welcome alternative. This was suggested at a Symposium in Canada years ago where accountability, transparency and grassroots decision making were called for years ago.
Only foolish leaders will ignore the swell in this call for change.
Here here to the last blog posting. ..
Where are the active or retired officers signing the petition in droves? And where is the 'swell in this call for change'. The absence of one active one specifically is telling and noticed.
They are / it is just not there world-wide! I would say: 'where are the 1000+ formers and family members listed' whose names were committed to an article by the owner of this blog- without prior permission having been sought- on Friday 12 July 2013? Apart from a very small percentage, they too have not responded in large numbers and very likely will not do so in days to come either.
One is living in cloud cuckoo land to expect the General, on receiving a petition of maybe a 100e-signatures, mainly by FSAO members whose services were terminated and not even in the SA any longer, to set in motion anything. Wake up and smell the coffee!
This is a very unfair comment. I am a retired officer with many former officer friends who are still as loyal to the SA as I am. My opinion is that the petition should have been a simple request for an enquiry.
Could we have some clarification about the petition having achieved its objectives?
To 'Where are the active or retired officers.....'
I would say - where is the compassion for those innocent people who have been hurt physically and spiritually by this? I'm sure they wouldn't have minded their names on the petition you refer to - all 270,000 of them. What is a little hurt pride in comparison?
I would say 'wake up and smell the wrongdoing, the needless suffering, the lives lost, the familes wrecked, the community shattered'.
'Except I am moved with compassion,
How dwelleth Thy spirit in me'.
Wake up.
The petition should just have been to request an independent enquiry.
Instead it reads as a hatred campaign against S.A. officers put together by bitter former officers who are simply out to get revenge.To go on and mention surprise that it is noticed one active officers signature is missing is petty to the extreme!Perhaps they too do not agree with the wording and therefore choose not to sign it.
I think you summed it up pretty well as to how it reads, hence the abysmal lack of support for the petition even from the most loyal FSAO members. It looks, sounds and smells of threat ( someone posted something about 'blackmail' in an earlier post) Not petty nor pretty but nevertheless still very telling that the absence of that one active officer on the list says more than anything else about the whole matter.
The backtracking has been a wise move - congratulations!
"Could we have some clarification about the petition having achieved its objectives?"
It was an ill conceived non-starter
'Loyal to the SA'. It's just an organisation - called into being by God over 100 years ago. Our loyalty should be to the people who have suffered, are suffering and will suffer because of this atrocious decision - not to the organisation. God called it into being - He can easily reverse the calling if we no longer fulfil our Christian duty.
