Rev Gerry Barlow, chair of the faith workers branch of Unite
"A bullying case can go on for a long time", says Terry Young, a former minister who runs the helpline.

'Campaign of hate'
Mr Barlow said: "Bishops can treat people shamefully. The most common experience is a priest gets called in for a pastoral chat, to 'see how things are going', within half an hour he's telling you he's going to fire you or take your licence away".
Parishioners can also carry out the bullying, according to Unite, citing the case of a priest in rural Worcestershire who claims he was driven out by a campaign of hate.
The majority of clergy do not actually want employment status
Reverend John Packer, Bishop of Ripon and Leeds
The Reverend Mark Sharpe resigned in October as rector of Teme Valley South saying he was picked on by members of his community after he tried to tackle financial problems within the parish. "It started with the tyres getting slashed, ended up with a dog mysteriously dying, the car being smeared with excrement, and broken glass across driveway. There was intimidation people swearing at you. A month ago I had the lights pulled off the car," Mr Sharpe said.
The Archbishop of Canterbury said the issue of bullying had to be tackled.

'Protection'
Unite is lobbying for the government to change the law to give priests greater protection.
But the Reverend John Packer, Bishop of Ripon and Leeds, told the BBC that while the church was "a human community like any other", a change of status was not necessarily the solution. "The majority of clergy do not actually want employment status, or at least that's been the indication consistently at general synod when this issue has been raised." "It's regarded as a calling by most clergy, not as a job, but there does need to be protection for people where these very tense situations do arise, particularly between clergy and congregation," he said.

This latest article makes a very sad, but interesting read. Fortunately in the SA things aren't quite like that and I hope I am not living in cloud cuckoo land but I don't think things are that bad for most of us. However, yesterday, on the first Sunday in the New Year I left our hall after the holiness meeting singing to myself: 'I don't like (Sundays)' and the more I sang, the stronger I felt what I was singing. Most people had been very warm in their New Year greeting to me. Very complimentary about the meeting and particularly the sermon. Encouraging about the future ... but then there was 'the' conversation with one of my local officers who appeared to be like a skunk, spraying his stink all over me as he had a whole list of things that were wrong. He didn't have a list in his had but as he spoke, complained, it seemed he was ticking all the items off in his head. I went through a whole host of emotions as he talked and as much as I wanted to wipe the floor with him and share a few home truths, I didn't but I was left leaving the hall, angrily and frustratingly singing: 'I don't like Sundays'.!!! I am so grateful that I had to return later that afternoon and minister to a very different group of people amongst whom the said local officer was not present. Do we really have to meekly accept the backlash of people's tongues?
I recall sometime ago hearing in days gone by 'Ministry / Officership used to be high profile and low stress but now it is low profile and high stress'.
Are we really getting it so wrong?

I don't miss the rudeness and disrespect at all.
We must remember that it was religious people that helped put Christ on the cross. Honor and respect is present at times but attempt to put a member or attender in check on something and all hell breaks out. Don't miss it.

In my early days, whilst still a Lieutenant, there was at times a sense where the DC, a Lt. Colonel, and even those at DHQ with the lesser rank of Major, assumed an air they deemed in keeping with their status. The simple term servant and its connotation rested on those with Captain's ranks and below. I recall hearing the DC bellowing orders to the DS when speaking of us underlings with reference to upcoming councils, 'don't invite them to come, command them !'
Although already a Major when our rank system was flattened to a degree, I recall how our system took on a more respectful and even-minded status. It was a sad day when the present General with a stroke of his pen struck down a 20th century decision sending us back to a victorian mind-set. I wonder how long it will take his successor to reverse his decision ?

There has always been that element of bullying within TSA and the church. I don't think it has gotten worse - I think the tension between those who want to live in the 21st century with a modern mindset and those who are stuck in the past is getting stronger. That is where the problem arises. Much of the bullying I believe comes from that tension.
Just more reasons why the church needs to change and 'get with the times'.

Why not get real and do what Jesus did and would do? Treat people with respect and love your neighbor.Do not "lord" it over one another like the heathen do. What ever happened to servant-leadership ? People should want to follow someone in leadership, not be demanded to follow. Jesus calls us , he does not demand.

As a retired Salvo officer in the Australian Southern Territory, reiring early at 62, and now gratefully attending church and glad that I got out of the Army "with my head", I have to say that bullying is very much part of Salvation Army, with leaders pulling rank and giving threats to their subordinates. As a corps officer I was threatened by THQ officers that if I didn't adhere "to the party line" I could be demoted, just because I was seeking justice and input from the corps leaders, with a senior officer verbally abusing, and the secretary in the front office hearing his shouting. But when I got a role on THQ after been "burned out" after 25 years of field work, I found that bullying was more
entrenched in the culture, with senior officers treating me like dirt! Now, seven years after "getting out" I will never ever want to have an association with the Salvos again, except attending the odd funeral, when I sit in the back pew, so that I can get away quickly if I feel the panic attack coming on!
I am so saddened to read of your experience.
May our Lord Jesus heal your heart.
God bless you
