IT'S THURSDAY Number 4 - Howard Webber

NUMBER 4

January 8, 2015

As the angels turned away and headed towards Sodom, Abraham approached the Lord and, aware of the impending doom that was to befall the city, asked the Lord, 'Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?' Genesis 18:23,24.

What a big-hearted man Abraham was. Because of the selfish choice he had made, Lot found himself caught up in a war and was captured. Yet, at great risk to himself, Abraham rescued him and all he possessed, (Ch 14). Foolishly, Lot then returned to what God saw to be an exceedingly wicked city, (Ch13:13). However, despite Lot's continuing foolishness resulting in the possibility of him being destroyed along with the city that had for so long tried God's patience, Abraham was still concerned for his nephew. As we continue to read of Abraham's pleading we discover that there was not even 10 righteous people in the whole of the city, (18:32,33). So the city was not spared, however, God rescued Lot and his family.

We live in an age that refuses to see God as judge or take any warning of eternal punishment seriously. God desires to save not destroy, but we have to change our attitude towards him if we are to receive his gift of Savation. One of the amazing things about the wicked men who were battering on Lot's door (v11), is they still would not give up trying to find the door even after the Lord had blinded them!

And when Lot warned his sons-in-law to escape they would not take him seriously,(v 14). There is a danger in the church today of frivolity and a lack of seriousness when it comes to spiritual truths. 'We must make everything light and laughable and carefree, nothing must be said that is unpalatable or that might offend,' seems to be the motto of many. God provided Jesus to rescue us because the danger we were facing was such a dreadful one and he loved us so much. Praise God for such mercy!
God bless you all.
