NUMBER 6

'Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah....and did for Sarah
what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham ....,'
(Genesis 21:1,2). Have you noticed how the Lord has a habit of ensuring that a
thing is impossible and that we are convinced that it is impossible before he then
does it?
Even had she accepted that Abraham could become a father in
his old age, she did not see God's promise to him extending to include her. She
was far too old. That is why she gave Hagar, her maidservant, to him to bear
his child. That is why she laughed when she heard the angel say that she was
about to become pregnant, (Gen 18:12)
Mary had never had sexual relations with
Joseph when an angel told her she would soon be with child. She knew it was
impossible. 'How will this be,' Mary asked the angel, 'since I am a virgin?'
When Jesus asked Philip where they could buy sufficient bread to feed the
multitude, he knew that the task was beyond them, (John 6:7), and Andrew knew
what food they had found was inadequate to feed such a crowd, (v8). Once aware
that his disciples knew it was an impossible task, Jesus did it!
If we are to see the wonder of God at work in our lives we must not
limit our expectations to what we think we are capable of or to those things
for which we feel gifted.
'Is anything too hard for
the Lord,' the angel asked Sarah (Gen 18:13). 'Expect great things from God,
attempt great things for God.' (William Carey). Lord give us the faith we lack
in a God for whom nothing is too hard.
