NOT ROB BELL

Best selling author and international teacher and speaker Rob Bell returns to the UK this April, speaking in London, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Bell, whose books include  Love Wins, was profiled in TIME magazine as one of 2011's hundred most influential people and comes to the UK off the back of his forthcoming title 'What We Talk About When we Talk About God' (released March 14th).

Bell is one of a number of the leadership of the Emerging Church (EC) who do not believe that the Bible is the highest authority for the Christian faith. In his book Velvet Elvis: Repainting The Christian Faith Bell, denies outright the historic orthodox Christian view of the Bible when he says: "


This is part of the problem with continually insisting that one of the absolutes of the Christian faith must be a belief that "Scripture alone" is our guide."


Brian McClaren, also a key mover and shaker in the EC wrote  in a book I'm reading now, “Scripture is something God had ‘let be,’ and so it is at once God’s creation and the creation of the dozens of people and communities and cultures who produced it.”  A Generous Orthodoxy, p. 162)

Neither author believes in the Salvationists' doctrine of Hell.

In a recent MSNBC interview, host Martin Bashir asked Bell a question about people’s eternal destiny. Bell said when asked, “Is it irrelevant about how one responds to Christ in this life in terms of determining one’s eternal destiny?” 

“It is terribly relevant and terribly important. Now, how exactly that works out and how exactly that works in the future, we are now firmly in the realm of speculation,” Bell replied.

For Bell, one of the big problems he has with the traditional teaching on heaven and hell is that he finds it irreconcilable that a loving God would send billions of people who never heard of Jesus and thus never had the chance to accept Jesus as their savior to hell. Bell apparently holds a “wider hope” theology, which believes that God will ultimately save most people, even, perhaps, all people. Derek Tidball, former principal of London School of Theology, called Bell’s book “theology lite” and pointed out that it “ducks some hard issue while firing out a lot of questions.” The theologian says; “He (Bell) says the sacrificial understanding of the cross belongs to a primitive cultural world we no longer inhabit, so he sidesteps a key understanding of the cross.”
