More from the book -
We unloaded what gear we’d carried with us to Russia and inspected the 3rdfloor flat. We learned to use the stairs as the lift was not always functioning, and was un-hygienic as it served regularly as a public WC. In the stairway on each landing, was a collection of refuse too large for the common use garbage chute, already loaded to over flowing. The flat consisted of three rooms and one smaller one. We learned later that by Russian standards it was considered a large flat. The small room was used as an office with the other three rooms forming the living room and two bedrooms. The kitchen, bathroom and toilet were a nightmare. The kitchen had holes in the walls and was infested with cockroaches, and a family of mice.
