It's Thursday - 25th February 2016

Thursday word from Genesis 59
'Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you, and the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land....,' Genesis 47:6 .

So, having decided that he will appeal to Pharaoh on their behalf(46:31-34), and knowing that Pharaoh may well want to interview some of his brothers, Joseph chose five of them to accompany him. The result of the meeting was that Pharaoh decided they were to settle in the best of the land of Egypt, which happened to be Goshen. Goshen was in NE Egypt, close to the border with Canaan. Being in the Nile Delta, it was fertile and ideal for both livestock and arable farming.

Although his brothers were shepherds and Hebrews and thus despicable in the eyes of the Egyptians(46:34), Joseph was not ashamed to own them as his brothers. Joseph may have been a very high branch and his brothers very low branches indeed, but they were of the same tree, (Matthew Henry). Hebrews 2:11 speaking of Jesus says, 'Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers.'

In addition to giving them the best land, Pharaoh offered the most capable among them, responsibility for his own livestock. All this reveals just how grateful Pharaoh was to Joseph. The blessings the brothers received from Pharaoh was as a result of the merit of Joseph.

The blessings we receive from God are not deserved, but are given us as a result of the merit of Jesus. Through Joseph they received, through Jesus we receive, hallelujah!

I have no claim on grace;
I have no right to plead;
I stand before my maker's face
Condemned in thought and deed.
But since there died a Lamb
Who, guiltless, my guilt bore,
I lay fast hold on Jesus' name,
And sin is mine no more.     SASB 290

God bless you all.

'I first received a copy of Howard Webber’s book, Meeting Jesus, October 2012 as a gift from General Linda Bond(R). Howard’s straight forward and real life stories of the challenges of evangelism inspired me. I shared a copy with the principal of the training college and we agreed that every cadet would receive a copy.
In my opinion Howard has done it again. He has written a candid and straightforward description of the struggles of a follower of Jesus midst the difficulties in of life and Christian service. Read this book with a spirit of joy. Be in prayer. You will discern wisdom, uncover resources and see insights in dying to self and living for Jesus. Your life will be deepened.'
